If you want to read a story about insta-lust that segues directly into sappy insta-love, well, this is your book.Admittedly, I'm coming into this saga in the middle, and I'm also new to this author, but the only thing that impressed me here was a detailed world-build (a few information dumps aside, but I can forgive the info dumps, which weren't numerous). The cover is also beautiful although it doesn't look like anyone described in the story.I read a sample before I bought and that sample was good enough to make me buy the book. BUT - I was amazed by how quickly the story took a majorly illogical turn *just* at that point - the end of the sample! From being a confident Colonel, a leader of men in battle, accustomed for years to regarding Tygerians as the enemy - and incidentally, not being gay - Ryan makes a 90-degree turn. He's panting after Mikos as soon as Mikos visits Ryan to persuade him to go through with the arranged marriage. I'm not a big fan of insta-lust, but it can be written erotically. Just not here. This character goes from being het in the space of *one meeting* to a guy literally panting for it. That's not erotic, it's just illogical. Attraction, I understand. Going from 0 to 100 in the space of one meeting isn't believable.After the arranged marriage, Ryan is caught up in the Tygerian way of life. That's basically being a consort to an over-the-top alpha male, "greatly respected," but also bonded with his spouse from the instant of a full sexual experience; given nothing worthwhile to do during the day, apparently, except eat (because Mikos thinks he's too thin - preserve me!) and take naps; and dealing with being seated separately from his spouse at a large royal event by provoking jealousy in the said spouse by dancing with another man. (What century is this work set in again?)And also, by the way, being expected to provide and raise heirs, with a little painful genetic modification. Oh, and a doctor can't touch the patient to administer said genetic mod shot, because, you know, that involves the doctor seeing the slave's, er spouse's, booty. And *no one* can see his booty but the husband. C'mon!This story could have been so much stronger if the author had given Ryan something more than token resistance to any of this. His resistance *always* crumbles the instant Mikos lays his hands on him. It was like reading a bad old '70's romance novel, where a good "rogering" by the hero robs the heroine of all her intelligence and all she can do is think about making the hero happy, all the while trying to conceal her (instant) love from him because she's not sure he loves her back! (Which in itself is very strange, because Mikos confesses to deep feelings for Ryan from the instant of their first "coupling." So really Ryan has nothing to worry about, but it's all a part of the token resistance he puts up sometimes, to create drama.)I would really, really like to give this book 1 star, if only because I find it so regressive, illogical, and downright silly at times. But the decent world-build (except for the Tygerian way of spousal life) is juuuuust enough to make me upgrade it, a little. I can imagine that some of this author's plots, and her character development are better than this story's. I hope so, because this one was a complete waste of time! But unfortunately, one experience of this Harlequin, er, Tygerian, way of life is enough for me. Once bitten, twice shy, especially with my money. I liked this story and I did not stop reading until I was at the end. Prince Mikos of Tygeria and Col Ryan Donnelly of the Alliance are forced into a marriage in order to bring an end to a deadly war. This only occurred because Ryan's sister ran off the day she was to marry Mikos. Mikos tries to be honest with Ryan from the very beginning and to also be open and forth coming. Moving to a new and different planet with different customs and practices takes time for Ryan to adjust, but he had Mikos's younger brothers who very helpful. Both Ryan and Mikos wants an end to the war so their people can stop dying. However, not everyone is happy with this union or ending of the war. The Alliance Resistance makes plans to wreak havoc and to continue the war and break the peace treaty. Mikos and Ryan must learn to trust each other if there will be any hope of a future for them. The conspiracy to destroy the peace treaty and their union comes from every side. The author did a great job of keeping the suspense and keeping you on your toes as you try to figure out who is involved and what will happen next! I really liked this book and I like the planet Tygeria. I look forward to reading the future installments of this series.
